James Martin (1985) is an American artist and animator based in Oslo, working under the name Studio Cartoons Deluxe. His practice centres on hand-drawn, frame-by-frame animation and illustration, exploring retro cartoon and comic aesthetics shaped by mid-century visual culture. Through dynamic lines, saturated colours and rhythmical compositions, Martin investigates how familiarity and newness can coexist within the same image. Recurring references from sci-fi, fantasy, surf, snow and motorsport create playful yet intentional worlds where movement becomes narrative. Influenced by 90s hip hop, 70s prog rock and a tactile drawing tradition, he aims to spark energy, connection and a quiet break from formulaic design.
